Work with us

Kala Sangam / Bradford Arts Centre Artist Advisory Group

As Kala Sangam enters one of the most exciting, significant periods of the company’s history, with the major redevelopment of our building and change of name to Bradford Arts Centre, we are looking to recruit 9 artists who work in performance artforms (e.g. dance, music, theatre) to form an Artist Advisory Group to support and guide our staff and Trustees.

Group members will act as critical friends to the organisation, ensuring our programme of activity reflects our Programming Strands and that the work we present is of high quality.

Led by Trustees Rashmi Sudhir and James Wilson, both practising artists, the group will enable artists to have even more of a voice in our forward planning. During our Capital redevelopment, the group will help us shape the expanded artistic offer we will present in Bradford Arts Centre on reopening in 2025 – ensuring that our new spaces meet the needs of artists.

What you’ll get out of it

Members will have an opportunity to see how an Arts Council NPO is run and have an opportunity to evaluate and challenge those ways of working. You’ll become part of a peer network of artists that we hope will lead to learning, mutual support and exciting collaborations. We think this opportunity will be the perfect first step if you’re interested in joining a Board or setting up your own arts organisation. It will also be invaluable experience for touring artists wanting to understand, and influence, how a venue operates.

The Artist Advisory Group will meet twice a year, starting in Summer 2024. You don’t need to be based in Bradford to be a member of the group, but these meetings will be held in person in Bradford, and we expect each meeting to take around 3 hours. Whilst there will be an agenda, there won’t be a big set of papers to read in advance. We’re aiming to keep the sessions much more relaxed and instead take the opportunity to talk and listen.

Alongside attending these two meetings, members of the group will be required to see a minimum of one Kala Sangam/Bradford Arts Centre performance each year.

We’re looking for people who can commit to being part of the group for at least 2 years, and we expect no one to stay on the group for longer than 4 years.

Each group member will be paid £200 per meeting attended, plus any expenses incurred (this can include overnight accommodation if required).

Group members will also be able to claim expenses incurred for attending one Kala Sangam/Bradford Arts Centre performance per year, with further financial support available on request if required.

How to apply

You can either apply in writing or by video. Written applications should be no more than two sides of A4, and videos should be no longer than 3 minutes in length.

In your application you should tell us about yourself, the artform that you practice and any pieces of work you want to bring to our attention. You should also tell us why you want to be part of our Artist Advisory Group and let us know if you have any connection to Bradford or one of the artforms in which our organisation specialises (such as Indian Classical dance). We’re aiming to ensure membership of the group reflects equally our three Programming Strands – in your application please let us know if your artistic practice or lived experience particularly aligns with one, or more, of these strands.

Please email your completed application to Kala Sangam’s Creative Director, Alex Croft, by midday on Friday 14 June 2024 –
