Bradford School of Art Student Commissioned for Bradford Arts Centre
We are delighted to announce that Bradford School of Art Student, Eve Wright, has been commissioned to create a sculpture for permanent display at Bradford Arts Centre.
The Vessel, explores Eve’s experiences as a neurodiverse, woman from Bradford. It is the final piece of our three commissions exploring heritage, along with a new work from local calligrapher Razwan Ul-Haq, that includes ink made from bricks taken from the building, and a sound installation exploring the history of St Peter’s House as Bradford’s General Post Office created by Turbynes.

Eve’s work was chosen for display by a panel of students from Carlton Bolling School’s Arts Council. Final year Higher Education Art and Design students at Bradford School of Art were invited to pitch for the commission, with three being shortlisted to develop their ideas further before being invited to present to the Arts Council pupils. After quizzing each artist about their work and experience, the group discussed what they liked about each piece before unanimously selecting Eve as the commissioned artist.
Aimee Gould from the Arts Council said this, ‘I and the others really like her work. When interviewing Eve, she had told us about her struggles with being a woman and autistic too. Coming out with such personal things normally takes a lot of courage, but even then, Eve wanted to spread the word about inequality and how it can affect people. She piqued my interest, and gained the interest of everyone in the Arts Council.’
Kala Sangam have been working with Carlton Bolling to support their journey to become an Artsmark school, including helping them establish their own Arts Council. The Council is made up of students from years 7 to 10 who have a passion for the arts and creativity. They support art activities in school, including fundraising, speaking at events and greeting guests at exhibitions.
Sara Sutton, Development and Delivery Manager at Bradford School of Art, said: “Congratulations to Eve Wright on this exciting commission after presenting herself so professionally to the selection panel. Kala Sangam’s new building will be a remarkable platform for Eve to showcase her exceptional creativity.
“Well done to our other talented Higher Education Art and Design students Zobia Kausar and Danis Hadjukovs for also making the shortlisted artists. This has been an excellent experience for everyone involved and will, no doubt, be instrumental in future artistic careers and personal growth. The work produced is a testament to the calibre of students we nurture at the Bradford School of Art, reflecting the dynamic and diverse nature of our art community. Enormous thanks to our dedicated partner Kala Sangam for giving our students this incredible opportunity.”
The Vessel will be on display in Bradford Arts Centre when we reopen in the autumn.
