Balbir Singh Dance Company: The Wise Ones

Published by KalaSangam on

Balbir Singh Dance Company is returning to Kala Sangam for the the first time since 2017 with the world premiere of new show, The Wise Ones.

A new work looking at the idea of wisdom. What is it? How do we gain it? How do we pass it on? The Wise Ones celebrates the powerful gifts of our older dancers and explores the forces that have shaped them. It is a work about ageing and the acquisition of wisdom that unites a live music score and intricate, expressive dance sequences.

The piece features the work of six dancers including septuagenarians – Bisakha Sarker and Guru Pratap Pawar – whose dance careers span many decades.  Veteran breakdancer from Leeds Villmore James completes the line up of Wise Ones and three younger performers will pairs with them to play their younger selves.

The Wise Ones is a passion project for Balbir Singh. He explains: ‘I’ve always dreamed of bringing all my favourite older dancers together in one show. These dancers were my mentors and I can’t forget that. The Wise Ones is helping me to achieve that dream on my doorstep as well as helping the next generation’.

The premiere at Kala Sangam is also a homecoming for Bradfordian Balbir, as he returns to the city where he first discovered Classical Indian Dance and decided to make it his career.

The dancers will be accompanied by live music created by composer and virtuoso instrumentalist Jesse Bannister. Jesse and Balbir are long-time friends and collaborators sharing a mixed heritage background and a ‘third culture’ sensibility. ‘ It’s great to bring Jesse into this work. We always like to push each other out of our comfort zones and the work is always the better for it.’ Jessie agrees: ‘It’s fantastic to be able to make work together again.’ Jesse will be joined on stage by vibrant guitarist Joe Harris.

The Wise Ones is a true celebration of age, who we are and how we make sense of the world through dance.

Tickets include a pre show festive drink and a delicious post-show curry!

7.30pm | Fri 10 & Sat 11 Dec | Pay What You Decide

All our events are Pay What You Decide, which means you don’t have to pay until after you have seen the event. We want to encourage more people to come and see events at Kala Sangam, more often.

Pay What You Decide not only allows you to pay what you can afford, rather than a fixed ticket price, but also removes the financial risk of buying a ticket for an event in advance without knowing whether you are going to enjoy it or not.

Tickets are available to book in advance as usual, but there is no obligation for you to pay until after you have seen the event. You can then decide on a price which you think is suitable based on your experience, which means if you haven’t enjoyed it at all, you don’t have to pay anything.

Please ensure you have arrived and collected your tickets 15 minutes before the event starts in order to secure your seats. At the end of the show, you can decide what to pay, either by cash or card on the door.

If you have ANY coronavirus symptoms, please DO NOT attend.

Temperature checks, hand sanitisation and mask wearing will be encouraged where appropriate.
