Summer College

For the first time in Calderdale eight young people who are on alternative to custody schemes elected to undertake this Arts Award accredited Summer College. The Summer College has taken place over the summer holidays with 13 to 18 year olds spending 25 hours a week, over six weeks, participating in a range of activities such as DJ-ing, rap, graffiti, drama, break dancing and film making.The Summer College provided the opportunity to work alongside professional artists, learn life skills including literacy and numeracy and to value their personal creativity. The course has been based at Square Chapel but has included learning sessions at the Piece Hall Visitor Centre and Art Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The Victoria Theatre, Bradford Alhambra and the National Media Museum.Since competing the Summer College one participant has returned to education, one has begun a construction course at Calderdale College, one is seeking employment on a Prince's Trust training programme and another is in full time employment
