Lilliane Gosling – The Ritual of Theyyam
Theyyam is an ancient neolithic ritual, which is still performed by people along the Malabar Coast of India. It is seen as a folk religion, with the worship of gods, goddesses, heroes, trees, animals, ancestors, spirits and more through dance, song, music and costumes all maintained by individual families from the untouchable caste.
The Ritual of Theyyam is artist Liliane Gosling’s personal response to what she sees as archetypes in the representation. The paintings are not direct representations of dances, but her take on an art form which is slowly dying out as the kavus or sacred groves where it is performed are destroyed by development.
Exhibition open: Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm from 27th October – 16th December 2017
